Rubies and Emeralds and Diamonds, Oh My!
April 22, 2010In the 60's, my parents took us through the mountains for a week vacation every year. I remember seeing the sign on the roofs of the barns. SEE ROCK CITY. Whether or not Daddy meant us to see that I will never know, but there was another, and then another, and we began to want to see Rock City... We finally arrived and I remember that the first thing I saw was a rock that was nothing but enormous amethysts, and jewels. They were possibly glass but to a 6 year old, they were the King's ransom in gems! My sister and I couldn't keep our hands off of them, and admittedly we were guilty of trying to find a loose one... From there we went to the Swinging Bridge and that was terrifying but fun. My brother stood at the end and made it swing and sway as we crossed. Then we went through the Eye of the Needle... and that was scary too because you felt so small and the rocks were so huge! We felt like we'd stepped into the Book of Fairytales with all of our favorite characters around every corner. Years later my husband and I went back to Rock City and it felt just as magical then as it did the first time... Thank you for keeping this memorable place for future generations to enjoy... and if one of those "gems" come loose, send it to me, please! :-)
We Came From Florida
March 4, 2010It always suprised me that people would flock to Florida for their yearly vacations. I was born and raised in Florida, so the things people came to visit we took for granted. Disney was where our school went for Grad Night; the Alligator Farm was an elementary school trip; Sea World a church youth trip. So our parents would take us to the mountains during our summer vacation. I will never forget the first time that we went to Tennessee. We stayed in a pop-up camper and got to swim in a pool. We also went to Rock City, Look Out Mountain, Opryland and Ruby Falls. My favorite memories from childhood came from that trip.
